What is Facebook connect?

Community Support March 01, 2011

Facebook connects allows you to participate as a member on the Lonely Planet website without needing to register for a new profile. It's important to know that you control your privacy settings via Facebook when you use Facebook connect.

Facebook controls what you share from your activity on Lonely Planet via their standard privacy controls. Users can disconnect or prevent our site from having access to your account information. Facebook also strongly polices privacy issues.

In order to log into www.lonelyplanet.com, three things need to happen. First, Facebook needs to authenticate your profile. This ensures that the you are who you say you are. Second, Facebook needs to authenticate our website. This ensures that the user is giving their information to our site and not someone else. Lastly, the you must explicitly authorize us to access your information. This ensures that the you know exactly what data you are disclosing to our site.

These steps may seem complex, but fortunately all you need to do is select allow when presented an authorization dialog in your browser that provides information about our site and the user data we are requesting. Then make sure your settings within your Facebook privacy settings are updated (as per above).
